Desperate Dawgs, created by Zach Gage and Asher Vollmer, is a two-player card game that is simple to learn but difficult to master. The goal of the game is to score as many points as possible by playing cards in runs and sets.

The game can be played with any number of decks, but for this guide we will be using two decks. Shuffle both decks and deal each player ten cards. The remainder of the cards form the draw pile, which is placed in the center of the players. The face-up card at the bottom of the draw pile is the first card in the discard pile.

The player who picks up the card on the left side goes first and play passes to the left after each turn. On a player's turn they must do one of three things:

Play a card from their hand into their front row. Draw one card from either deck and place it into their hand. Discard one card from their hand into the discard pile.

When playing a card into their front row, it must be played adjacent to an existing card. Cards of the same rank (example: two kings) can be played next to each other, as can cards of different suits (example: king of clubs and ace of spades). In both cases, these cards would then form a run. When playing a card into their front row, a player cannot put down another card until their next turn if they want to keep playing cards in runs. If a player cannot or does not want to put down another card, they can end their turn by drawing one card from either deck and placing it into their hand.

When playing a card in their back row, it can be played anywhere since it doesn't have to be adjacent to an existing card like in the front row. A player can also put down multiple cards in their back row on a single turn as long as they are all different ranks (example: four 2s). When putting down multiple cards at once, these cards still form sets even if they are not all of the same suit (example: two kings and two queens). Sets are worth more points than runs since they are harder to create.

A player can only have seven cards in their hand at any given time, so they must discard one card on each turn if they have more than seven cards. Discarding a wildcard earns you an extra point, so it is generally advantageous to hold onto wildcards until you can play them into sets or runs for higher scores. The first player to reach 100 points or more wins the game!
